Jonathan was a PhD student affiliate with EPoD until he completed his degree in Political Economy and Government at Harvard. His research is on the political economy of state building in developing countries. He embeds randomized field experiments in state-building initiatives --- such as tax collection, anticorruption programs, and land title formalization --- to evaluate the effectiveness of these initiatives and explore how they shape citizens’ engagement with the state. His current field research is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but he has also worked in Tanzania, Haiti, and Guatemala.
Before starting graduate school, Jonathan received a BA in Social Studies from Harvard College and worked as a researcher for Dr. Paul Farmer at Partners In Health, focusing on issues of aid effectiveness after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
