Lisa Xu is a fifth-year student in the Public Policy PhD program. Her research focuses on the drivers of major changes in the structure of employment in developing countries, such as structural change out of agriculture into manufacturing and services, and the rise of wage employment versus self-employment. One of her projects analyzes international differences in the rate of wage employment in the non-agricultural sector, and another explores the connection between smallholder agriculture and the growth of small and medium enterprises in Uganda. Lisa has also previously done fieldwork in Malawi, the DRC, and Ghana, and volunteered in Benin.
